Frank Sinatra was known for his voice but his signature, his mastery, was his phrasing, how he sang the words in the time or rhythm of a song. He treated his voice as an instrument, finding when to push forward at certain spots or pull back at others, when to stretch a word or a syllable and, most importantly, when to take a large or small silent breath. As a result, he was a master at creating musical tension and emotional impact with just his voice. Richard Burton was very similar with the spoken word. Talk about setting the bar high. But I like challenges.
